I interviewed Meikhel Philogene about his life and career, what inspires his music, and the work that went into his new EP, Who Is M.E.I.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

I am the founder and CEO of M.E.I. Recordings. I am also a attorney and producer.

When did you first WANT to produce music?

I have always loved music, but I started producing this year.

When did you take a step to start producing music?

I started about a few months ago.

What was your first piece of music released, and what inspired it?

I released the EP, “Who Is M.E.I.” I wanted to have sounds and themes emphasizing my upbringing. It also served as a titular project for my company, M.E.I. Recordings.

What was your latest music released, and what inspired it?

I recently released two singles on the same day. I wanted to release them in tandem for the juxtaposition.

Focusing on your latest piece of music. What were your biggest challenges with it?

Not being a perfectionist and time were the biggest challenges.

What are you working on right now?

I have a couple music-related things going on, but more music business-related endeavors are brewing. Stay tuned.

Do you keep to a theme with your music, or just go where the mood strikes?

A mix of both; I typically start off with a Lo-fi, Boom Bap, or Hip-Hop sound, but then will give it a more Experimental feel and add whatever I feel fits the best.

What is your favourite piece of music you’ve created, and what do you love about it?

I think “Me” off of “Who Is M.E.I.” is my favorite. It has that more old school sound that I grew up on.

Do you find other people’s music inspires you? Who do you listen to most?

Definitely. I like to listen to a little of everything, but mainly like Hip-Hop the most. I would say J. Cole, KOTA The Friend, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Marlon Craft, Lil Baby, and Conway the Machine have been played a lot recently.

Is your music available to the public, and where can people listen to it?

Yes, you can check out my Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ioTXFTBlxHhii6eoaoAp0), but can also stream on Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, Audiomack, SoundCloud, etc.

Are you able to make music full time, or do you have day job?

It is, right now, more of a pet project as my day job is running M.E.I. Recordings and my other company, Psalm Infinity.

What’s something you never expected about producing music? What have you learned that surprised you?

I knew, but never knew how long it takes to create, if that makes sense. I learned how to engineer music a lot better.

Do you have any important events coming up we should know about?

I will be joining Ike Rhein on his tour with Luh Kel starting at the beginning of August.

What is the first piece of advice you would give to anyone inspired to make music?

Learn everything, listen to everything. Try to learn how to make music from top to bottom: play instruments, sing, rap, produce, engineer, write songs, etc. Listen, absorb, and dissect all different genres of music.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Most definitely. The fruits of my labor are being seen. All the work and sacrifices are what make it worth it.
